Last week in my sports medicine practice 3 different parents asked me the same question: Is youth football safe?

In youth sports, we do see injuries that we don’t see in adult athletes, like certain fractures. However, it is clear that overall injury rates, as well as rates of severe injuries, are lower in youth football compared to high school or college football.

In my 21 years coaching youth baseball, I’ve been called a good coach, a great coach, an overrated coach and a horrible coach. I guess it depends on which game or games people have seen me coach to determine which superlative to use.

Mental Abuse in Youth Sports

From time to time I hear about emotional abuse in youth sports in my office and in correspondences with the athletes I work with.

Playing sports is definitely much harder on today’s youth than the last generation for many reasons. Chief among them is the overheated competition our kids are facing in all aspects of their lives. 30 years ago, there was no such thing as “select sports” and “showcases.”

Two Sports in the Same Season: What Can We Do?

Two sports in the same season, it doesn’t end. We just switch which team gets dibs on our kids. Now that fall soccer is over we head into the winter season. The fall soccer players are taking on winter sports, but also playing indoor or futsal, or just plain training outside.  Two sports in the same season: I call this overlap season. Well, overlap used to be a season, now it’s year round.
